On compressions and rarefactions...

me: Instead of crests and troughs, compression waves have what we call compressions and rarefactions. Compression is a word you're familiar with, rarefaction is a weird one. Rarify is the root word, and the only place I've ever heard it is in a song by the Newsboys and a song by Frank Sinatra.
student: What? Frank's a nacho?
