sass and sensibility

"I don't see much sense in that," said Rabbit. "No," said Pooh humbly, "there isn't. But there was going to be when I began it. It's just that something happened to it along the way."

hehehe

Light of My Life just came to ask me if I had any videos. Apparently his religion teacher had sent him (no idea why they're watching random movies in that class...usually it's pretty hardcore...). I took stock of my science movie collection and first handed over a Bill Nye DVD, which he then returned to me when I offered him the 1983 NOVA classic: "The Miracle of Life." teehee :)

If you ever watched that in high school, you remember because it scarred you for life...

[From Amazon.com: Still startlingly beautiful after several years, Nova's The Miracle of Life records human conception for the first time on film, and much more. Living, functioning reproductive systems are laid bare to the camera, and there is so much to explore and absorb that Nova's expert guidance is much needed and appreciated. The viewer follows an egg from its follicular development in an ovary, through the delicate, flowery fallopian tube for fertilization, and on to the uterus for development and eventual birth. Likewise, we follow the shorter journey of millions of sperm as they develop and strive mightily to reach the egg. (There isn't a man alive who can watch intraurethral footage without squirming--see for yourself!) Photographer Lennart Nilsson has shown us something profoundly beautiful and yet has left its fundamental mystery intact. The Miracle of Life is a rarity: a documentary that is also art. --Rob Lightner]

More misunderstandings...

So a church group brought dinner for the kids the other night. This particular group loves to serve themed meals, which the kids may or may not be excited about eating, depending on how "weird" the food is (chicken will go fast, but plan on taking home any hummus you tried serving...). The meal they chose to serve the last time they were here was based on some recipes one of the women had found in a cookbook that claimed to replicate a meal that Julius Caesar would have eaten. She announced this rather excitedly to the kids, and one of the sophomore girls turned to me and whispered:
"Is that like from the movie Julie and Julia?"

Nope. Wrong person. Wrong time. Wrong part of the world. :-p

yes, the answer really is that obvious...

One of my advisees:
"Miss Book, is potato chips really made of potatoes?"

It's been too long...

Some quotable quotes from the past...weeks...months? Sorry, April has been ridiculous...:-p

"My mentor's a MILF!"

"Since it's called Hoss's Steakhouse, do they sell steak?"
-12th grade girl

9th grader, upon seeing a picture of an elderly woman:
"That's why I'm never marrying a white woman--when they get old their skin wrinkles up."

And, of course, Mr. Know-it-all, jubilantly holding up a folder he thought he'd lost:
"Jesus is real!! Miss Book, I believe in God!!"

In English class the other day the juniors were having a discussion that somehow turned to Sigmund Freud.
junior girl: Isn't that the magician guy who works with the animals?
teacher: That would be Siegfried and Roy, not Sigmund Freud.
