sass and sensibility

"I don't see much sense in that," said Rabbit. "No," said Pooh humbly, "there isn't. But there was going to be when I began it. It's just that something happened to it along the way."

Obviously...

Rev (to me): Your work is bearing fruit.
Drama Queen (also to me): What kind of fruit did you bore??

me (trying to explain why running cars on electricity still produces pollution): Where does the electricity come from?
student: power plants?
me: what kind of power plants?
Drama Queen: electric ones... (said in the same tone of voice one would use to say "duh...")

Baa!

One of the best responses on a test so far... (Background: the definition I give them for "malleable" is "ability of a substance to be hammered into sheets." Example: aluminum foil.)

"Metals are mallable [sic] because they can be made into sheeps."

HAHA!
:)

Well, I mean, I guess if you were going to make an idol in the form of a sheep it might be easier to use a malleable substance...for some reason I just keep picturing Moses and the golden calf...

On Saviors and Semester Exams...

Ahh! It's been over a month! Yikes...I guess those two weeks off really took their toll on my ability to blog :-p There are some things I've been meaning to write though.

I'm giving the chemistry semester exam right now. Here's what one of the girls just asked me:
"Miss Book. I have a serious question. If I take, like, a half hour nap right now, will I still have time to finish this?"

This is made even more amusing by the fact that she's definitely one of the top students in the school... :)

Giving semester exams can be painful. Especially with the 8th graders who were honestly at my desk every other minute with a new question. Most of their questions were about stuff they should know. "What's the difference between atomic mass and atomic number?"
"I can't tell you! that's the test question!"
"You didn't teach us about viscosity."
"Yes I did, I can even show you where you wrote it down in your notes!"

or, my favorite:
Miss Book, do you want us to circle the answer for the multiple choice or write it on the line?
Well, is there a line given?
Yes.
Then what do you think you should do with it?

And an older story I've been meaning to share. Before Christmas Break we took groups of students to various places for a volunteer day. Two other teachers and I took a group of kids to a nearby retirement home where we made holiday cards for the residents and visited. The two other teachers I was with happen to be Jewish, which always makes for interesting holiday conversations...
Student: So Miss Brett, is Jewish a race or a religion?
Brett: It's a religion.
Student: What's the main belief?
Brett: The main thing that's different is that we don't believe that Jesus is our Savior. We don't believe that our Savior has come yet.
Student: Well when he does, can I meet him??!?
